Kampung and City
Instrumentation: (Chinese Orchestra) 221, 2021, 2211, 111, Plucking Instruments, 5 Perc, Strings
Duration: 13 minutes
Program Note:
“Kampung” means “village” in Malay. I grew up in the capital, Kuala Lumpur - a big city. My only impression of the villages, such as the early morning dew, and never-ending rice paddy, were all only from watching television or my own imagination. In 2014, when I was on the way to Borobudur from Yogyakarta, all of those vague impressions suddenly became real and were spread out in front of me. I felt as if I was standing on a border, with kampung on one side and the city on the other. This experience had a deep impact on me, and made me forget how busy the life in the city is. Experiencing this contrast has also enabled me to realise that kampung and city are always bonded to each other.
“Kampung and City” has three sections: slow section, fast section and coda.
