Instrumentation: Chinese Ensemble

Program Note:

Commissioned by Singapore Ding Yi Music Company, and premiered in Singapore at The First Chinese Chamber Music Festival in December 2013. “Momentum” begins with an ostinato motive that is inspired by the Purple Bamboo Tune, a folk tune in south China. The music later developed with a repetitive and interlocking rhythmic pattern inspired by Minimalism and Indonesian Gamelan music.

Momentum is inspired by composer’s constant travels between Malaysia, China and North America since year 2010.

本作由新加坡鼎艺团委约创作，首演于2013年新加坡首届华乐室内乐节。作者引用了华人熟悉的“紫竹调”旋律，结合东南亚甘美兰音乐（印度尼西亚一种主要由金属打击乐器组成的乐队）的节奏和音色特点，并借鉴了简约派音乐不断反复、发展的特征。作者自2010年起常在马来西亚、中国以及北美三地之间旅行，受启发而作。
